When it comes to replacing windshields on newer vehicles, there’s more to the repair process than just swapping out glass.

Today’s vehicles are a lot more high-tech and often have additional safety features built into the windshield, like lane-departure warning systems, forward collision alerts, and adaptive cruise control. These modern safety advancements require specialized recalibration after a full windshield replacement.

“One in five vehicles on the road is equipped with these Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that rely on cameras located on the windshield to function. So naturally, when we replace a windshield, these advanced safety features require recalibration to function properly and maintain any manufacturer warranties,” explains Aaron Budlong from Apple AutoGlass Abbotsford.

Apple AutoGlass technicians can recalibrate all major ADAS functions, including forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. So, you don’t have to worry about adding a visit to your dealership after a windshield replacement.

“Our technicians are able to recalibrate the ADAS features on 99 per cent of all vehicles and, thankfully, most if not all comprehensive insurance coverage in B.C. will cover the cost of recalibration as part of the windshield replacement process,” Budlong says.

Apple AutoGlass technicians use precision tools developed to meet car manufacturer standards. They are specially trained and certified to ensure they get the job done right the first time.

At the same time, it’s always best to prevent a full windshield replacement whenever possible by getting any chips repaired promptly, before they turn into cracks.

“While a normal rock chip can be repaired quickly, easily and affordably if caught in time, once a chip has turned into a crack, a full professional windshield replacement is required along with a recalibration for cars with ADAS,” Budlong says.

“So don’t wait when it comes to getting that chip repaired – get it fixed as soon as possible to prevent more costly repairs down the road!”
