Some local rugby teams are competing in the provincials this week after clinching wins at the Eastern Valley Athletic Association (EVAA) championships last Wednesday (May 24) at Rotary Stadium.
Both the Yale Secondary senior boys’ and girls’ AAA squads won their divisions.
The girls beat W. J. Mouat Secondary 46-0 in the final. Samara Mason led the way with three tries.
The boys beat Langley’s R. E. Mountain Secondary 34-5. Carter Craven led the way with two tries.
In the AA division, the Bateman Secondary senior boys – ranked fourth in the province – celebrated a 46-3 victory over Langley’s DW Poppy Secondary.
Micah Barker, Isaac Lynn, Logan Thiessen and Liam Olafsen all scored two tries, with Logan Thiessen the “Man of the Match.”

The Abby Senior girls played in the final AA match, but lost to DW Poppy. However, they earned a berth into the provincials, and are ranked fifth in the province.
The Bateman boys won the EVAA junior division, beating Mouat 41-0 in the final. Cade Handy and Sean Alejo led the way.
The provincials get underway Wednesday (May 31) at Abbotsford Exhibition Park and run until Saturday.
The AAA senior girls, who won the provincials in 2022, are ranked first and the boys are ranked fifth heading into the provincials.
The tournament schedule has not yet been finalized.
Meanwhile, the junior boys play Tuesday (May 30) at 4 p.m. at Abbotsford Senior against Oak Bay Secondary in the quarter finals.
The remaining junior boys games are at Exhibition Park, with the final placing games on Saturday at 1 p.m.
