Local junior varsity teams finish season strong

Mouat, Bateman, and Abby are all moving towards promising playoff runs at the junior level.

The W.J. Mouat Hawks' junior football team finished off their regular season with a 41-32 victory over the Abby Senior Panthers on Thursday.  Missing some of their key players, Abby played a gritty game, and took a 24-21 lead going into halftime.  However, the Hawks came out of halftime determined, and scored the next twenty points of the game.  Key performances for the Hawks came from Kosovar Hyseni, Nathan Frenette, and Kamron Sachdev.  The Hawks finished their league play with a 6-1 record, and will now enjoy a bye week before they start their run in the AAA playoffs with a Nov. 6 home game against Handsworth (5:30 p.m.).

The Robert Bateman junior varsity Timberwolves strung together two solid performances over the last two weeks, losing to the undefeated New West Hyacks 21-20 on Oct. 23, before defeating crosstown rivals, the Rick Hansen Hurricanes, 27-24 on Oct. 29. Bateman was boosted by the running of Anthony Bodger, who scored three touchdowns against the Hyacks, and two against the Hurricanes (175 yards in nine carries). The Timberwolves will play their final regular season game against Lord Tweedsmuir on Thursday, Nov. 6 in Cloverdale with a 3 p.m. kickoff.
