The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team spent the last few days of 2013 in Windsor, Ont., where they dropped two of three games at the Lancers Holiday Classic tournament.
Both of the Cascades’ losses came against the host Windsor Lancers, who have won three straight CIS national titles and are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation.
No. 7-ranked UFV fell 66-39 in their first game of the tourney on Dec. 28, with the Lancers breaking the game open with a 17-2 run in the second quarter.
The Cascades bounced back for an 82-66 win over the Guelph Gryphons the next day, behind 16 points from Sarah Wierks.
On Dec. 30, UFV got another crack at the Lancers, and the rematch was much closer throughout than the 63-43 final score might suggest. The Cascades trailed by just six points heading into the fourth quarter, before Windsor pulled away down the stretch.
• The UFV men’s hoopsters were in Phoenix, Ariz. for the Maricopa County Holiday Classic, but with a roster of just six players available, they dropped all three games.
The Cascades got seven three-pointers from Manny Dulay in their opener vs. the Cochise College Apaches, but dropped a close 63-58 decision. They followed with defeats to South Mountain Community College (89-79) and the Phoenix College Bears (81-61).
The Cascades basketball teams open the second half of the Canada West regular season on Jan. 10 at the University of Winnipeg.
