Fire crews in Abbotsford were called to a home on Lilac Crescent to assist police with the opening of a safe found during a search warrant.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested after cash and drugs were found in a safe in a home in the 2400 block of Lilac Crescent (south of Hillcrest Avenue) in Abbotsford.

Abbotsford Police executed a search warrant of the central Abbotsford home at about 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. At about 9 p.m., they contacted Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service for assistance.

When fire crews arrived, police had moved a safe out to the carport of the residence. They used a reciprocating saw to open it, and then two officers placed the safe in a large plastic container and moved it back into the home.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the safe contained $3,800 cash, 800 grams of cocaine, 400 grams of meth and some crack cocaine. The arrested man is well-known to police, he said.
