UFV gets provincial trades funding

University of Fraser Valley will add 194 new training spaces

The University of the Fraser Valley is benefiting from a provincial program aimed at expanding training and reducing waitlists for trades necessary for booming industries, including the liquefied natural gas sector.

UFV will receive $807,000 to add 194 new training spaces, which will be available to students as early as September. Another $65,000 will go towards operation and equipment costs to support the programs.

The funding is part of a $6.8 million investment in trades training.

The money will open up 40 welder foundation seats, 16 apprenticeship seats, 18 carpenter foundation seats, 16 carpenter apprentice seats, 54 electrician foundation seats, 32 electrician apprenticeship seats and 18 heavy-duty equipment mechanic foundation seats.

“Injecting $872,000 into our faculty of applied and technical studies builds on the University of the Fraser Valley’s ability to continue producing top professionals for a variety of trades. We’re proud to increase our role in shaping the future, both locally and beyond,” said Jackie Hogan, UFV’s chief financial officer and vice-president, administration.

Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas added:

“A career in the trades can provide individuals with the opportunity for long-term, well-paying jobs that strengthen our families and communities.”
