Abbotsford Police believe that the woman whose body was found at the side of Riverside Road on Monday morning was the victim of a hit-and-run.

Const. Ian MacDonald said police have identified the victim as a 34-year-old South Asian woman who had "significant injuries" to her rear torso which are consistent with the impact from a vehicle.

They are not releasing the woman's name at this time, pending notification of next of kin.

However, the Abbotsford News spoke with a man late Tuesday who said he was a friend of a woman who had been missing for over a week and whom friends believed was the deceased person.

The man lives in, and owns, an east Abbotsford home in which he had rented a room to the woman for the last six years.

He said his friend, age 34, left the home on Sunday, Feb. 10 after an argument with her boyfriend, who also lives in the residence.

She has not been heard from or seen since, he said. Friends reported her absence to police, and were in the process of putting together missing-person posters when they heard about the incident on Riverside Road.

The man said the woman has a friend who lives on Riverside Road, and it was quite likely she could have been on her way to see him.

MacDonald said the woman's death appears to have occurred in the days prior to her body being found by a passerby.

Police are now asking for witnesses who might have information about the victim, or the area in which she was discovered, relating to the period from Friday, Feb. 15 to Monday, Feb. 18.

MacDonald said police believe the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision, and possibly other occupants, would have been aware of the impact.

The woman's body was found on Riverside, about halfway between King and Vye roads.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.
