An Abbotsford townhouse suffered extensive damage to a bedroom following a fire at about 5:15 this morning.

Crews from Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) arrived at the scene at 3044 Clearbrook Rd. to find a mattress on fire in a bedroom.

Two residents in the suite were sleeping at the time, but escaped without harm.

Assistant Fire Chief Dave Rivett said the fire was quickly extinguished.

"We had crews here within a couple of minutes, so that was very fortunate," he said.

The bedroom suffered extensive smoke and fire damage, while the rest of the suite had smoke damage. No other units in the complex were damaged.

Rivett said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, although it is believed to be accidental. The damage to the suite is estimated to be $50,000.

He said the residents were not insured for the fire damage, and emergency social services was called to assist them.

Five AFRS units and 20 firefighters attended the scene.

This is the second townhouse fire in Abbotsford this week. The previous one took place Monday at a complex on Bevan Way.
