Photographers have gathered at the Abbotsford airshow to compete for title of amateur photographer of the year.

Amateur photographers from across the province have arrived at the Abbotsford International Airshow for the Black Press' Next Generation Amateur Photographer of the Year contest.

More than 2,000 entries were submitted for the second annual contest, and were judged by a panel of experts on subject, composition, impact and other criteria.

Amateur photographers from across B.C. had until July 4 to send in their favourite photos from the past 12 months.

They were invited to submit up to five photos each, with entries encompassing a wide range of topics, including wildlife, sports, landscapes, portraits, abstracts and more.

Now, the finalists are on site to photograph the airshow and compete for the title of top amateur.

The contest is sponsored by Black Press, London Drugs and the Abbotsford International Airshow.

Finalists receive full VIP access to the airshow, which runs this weekend at Abbotsford Airport, with preferred viewing to take photos of all the action.

They will compete for more than $1,500 in prizes and the chance to be named the Next Generation Amateur Photographer of the Year.

Last year, Black Press received more than 2,000 entries for the contest from amateur photographers from Kelowna, Hope, Vancouver and communities around B.C.

More than 70 finalists gathered at the Abbotsford International Airshow, submitting their best photos for the final competition.

The winner of last year's contest was Rod Jones of Abbotsford.

Winners were also named in the individual categories of Best Air Photo, Best Static Photo, Best Crowd Photo and the People's Choice Award.
