UFV presenting Merchant of Venice

Controversial Shakespearean tale opens March 8 at University of the Fraser Valley's Chilliwack campus.

In their 33rd theatre season, the University of the Fraser Valley will preform Shakespeare’s the Merchant of Venice as their third production of the 2012/13 season.

Shakespeare’s tale the Merchant of Venice is a controversial play that pushes the issue of love, race, trust and mercy. The work poses three questions: where does love come from? Why do people of different races and religions distrust each other? As well as what is the quality of mercy?

Theatre department head Bruce Kirkley will direct UFV’s second presentation of Shakespeare’s work, since 1991.

The UFV Theatre student cast consists of: Ron Jackson as Shylock, Gabriel Kirkley as Antonio, Rae MacEachern-Eastwood as Portia and Tim Howe as Gratiano.

The production will open at 7:30 p.m on March 8 at the Chilliwack North Campus, at the corner of Yale and Airport roads. Evening shows will run March 9, 15-16 and 21-23.

As well as two half price evening shows March 6 and 7. Afternoon matinees will run March 13 and 14 at noon and on March 24 at 2 p.m. There will be a pay what you can event on March 17 at 2 p.m. For information call 604-795-2814 or email theatre@ufv.ca
