Step back in time on Canada Day with the Royal B.C. Museum's penny carnival, July 1 from noon to 4 p.m.

Try your hand at the croquet challenge, egg and spoon race and bean bag toss and discover other family-friendly surprises on the grounds of the museum.

From there, explore the Helmcken House and St. Ann's Schoolhouse or head inside the museum to see Race to the End of the Earth, an engaging exhibition about the first explorers to reach the South Pole.

Also on at the RBCM, learn about Victoria's historic Chinatown, the oldest such neighbourhood in Canada.
