The Yale Lions are the lone Abbotsford team remaining with championship hopes after day two at the senior girls basketball provincial championships in Langley.

The Lions upset the second-ranked Argyle Pipers in the 4A quarter-final round on Thursday (Feb. 28) and have advanced to tonight’s (Friday) semifinal/

Yale takes on the third-ranked Seaquam Seahawks tonight at 8:30 p.m. and a win in that game qualifies the team for the provincial final on Saturday (March 2).

Ava Heppner led the Lions with 29 points, while Maeva Carnahan added 18. The Lions were buoyed by a 28-13 second quarter and led for most of the game.

Yale made it to the semifinal round in 2023, but then fell to the Walnut Grove Gators and eventually placed fourth in the province.

Thursday marked the end of the line for the provincial title dreams of the MEI Eagles.

MEI lost 69-58 to Reynolds Secondary in the 3A quarter-final round. The club trailed 29-28 at halftime, but a 25-18 third quarter sunk spelled doom for the Eagles.

Olivia Sidhu scored a team-high 23 points for MEI, with Lola Reimer contributed with 13. The Eagles now move on to the consolation bracket for the remainder of the tournament.
