Thunderbirds beat Silvertips

Fraser Valley picks up pair of wins over North Island team

The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds trip to Nanaimo proved to be a fruitful one.

The British Columbia Major Midget League hockey club traveled to Vancouver Island to take on the North Island Silvertips for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday, notching two wins.

It kicked off on Saturday, with Abbotsford’s Zac McKee tying the game at one just over five minutes into the first period. Fraser Valley added two more goals in the first, while allowing another to skate out of the first period up 3-2.

Abbotsford’s Ryan Crosby-Jones gave Fraser Valley a two-goal cushion in the third, and McKee scored again late to give Fraser Valley the 6-4 win.

Sunday’s game saw the T-birds fall behind early, but then score three unanswered goals in the second and third periods to win 3-1.

Abbotsford’s Jake Mulder scored a pair of goals, with local product Andrew Sorensen picking up an assist. T-birds goalies Paul Tucek and Jordan Naylor earned a win apiece in the games.

The pair of wins improves the Thunderbirds’ record to 13 wins, nine losses and six ties, and they are now tied for fourth place in the 11-team BCMML.

The T-birds are off this weekend, but return to action on Jan. 23 and 24 for two more games against the Silvertips at the BCMML showcase event in Richmond.
