T-birds fall to Chiefs

Fraser Valley drops game on the road to Vancouver Northeast

The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds came back from one-goal deficits twice on Sunday against the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs, but they couldn’t do it a third time.

The Thunderbirds lost 3-2 to the Chiefs in British Columbia Major Midget League hockey regular season action at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre in Coqutilam, but put up a fight in the process.

Fraser Valley fell behind 1-0 after the first period, but Mackenzie Wight tied the game up in the second period with a slapshot that found the top corner. The Chiefs pulled ahead again before the end of the second, but Wight scored again in the third to draw the Thunderbirds even. Abbotsford’s Ryan Crosby-Jones drew an assist on the second goal.

However, the Chiefs pulled ahead for good with just 46 seconds left to earn the 3-2 win.

The two teams met again on Monday night at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre, but details were not available at press time.

Sunday’s loss drops the Thunderbirds’ record to 10 wins, nine losses and six ties on the season. They sit in seventh place in the BCMML.

After Sunday’s game, Fraser Valley is off until Jan. 9. For more details on the team, visit
