On Friday, Sept. 15, Robert Bateman’s senior varsity football team, the Timberwolves, faced off against the Nanaimo Islanders in their second game of the season.

Finishing the game with a tidy score of 19-14, the Timberwolves now find themselves standing tall in yet another victory.

Following the game, I spoke with Ryan Kaethler, Quarterback, about what led to the Timberwolves' success. Though Bateman had the at-home advantage, the “didn't take the game by a big sweep,” Ryan remarked. Rather, it was two players noted by Kaethler that led to the win – Kent Hicks and Freddy Lynn, as both gave the Timberwolves the edge they needed. With daring passes, catches and offensive tactics, these powerhouses helped turn the tide of the game.

The Islanders also showed their prowess while holding Bateman back, allowing them only short yardage gains. Determination and brute force assisted the Islanders in their attempts to break through the defensive wall made by the Bateman players, but ultimately to no avail.

“After two years, we’re light years ahead of (W.J.) Mouat,” remarked coach Kelly Lochbaum.

Now, you may not be up to date with the latest highschool sports news, but as of this season, W.J. Mouat’s football program celebrated its 25th anniversary. With Robert Bateman Secondary’s line of top level athletes, and a great response from the community, the Timberwolves are ready to set themselves apart from their competition.

With all the support and opportunities the Timberwolves have and will continue to receive, it is unquestionable that this team is a formidable opponent that will go far this season.
