Sports in brief: Soapbox derby coming up in Mission

The Mission and District Soapbox Derby Association is hosting its derby on Saturday, June 16 at Stave Lake St. and Prentis Ave.

The event is open to boys and girls age 8-14, with a $25 entry fee. Race day check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., and racing starts at 9 a.m. The event also includes hot dog eating contests and games for kids.

Pre-race day is Sunday, June 3, with final registrations accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Mission Secondary. For more information, visit missionsoapbox.com.

TRADITIONAL POWERHOUSE

Abbotsford Traditional beat the Red Hawks 59-42 to win the Fraser Valley Grade 8 girls spring basketball league last Thursday.

Nakisa Levale (16 points), Veronica Draayerd (11) and Sukhi Birk (10) were the top scorers in the championship game, as Abby Traditional completed a perfect 12-0 spring season. Chelsea Eilsperin led the Red Hawks with 10 points.

The Panthers won the bronze, stopping D.W. Poppy 39-29 behind 12 points from Kolbe Unger and nine from Priya Samra. Emma Copley scored 12 points in the loss.

Hatzic's Joelle Marks was league MVP.

LINDORES LANDS SCHOLARSHIP

A hockey prospect with Abbotsford connections has earned a scholarship from Northern Michigan University for the coming season.

Robert Lindores, whose father Doug hails from Abbotsford, signed with Northern Michigan after a productive season with the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL. The forward posted 61 points (26 goals, 35 assists) in 58 games with the Eagles.
