Sophie Schmidt and the Canadian senior women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to host Germany in their opener the FIFA Women's World Cup on Sunday.
Playing before 73,680 fans at the Olympiastadion Berlin, the Canadian squad found themselves trailing 2-0 at halftime on goals by Kerstin Garefrekes and Celia Okoyino Da Mbabi. Christine Sinclair drew the Canadians to within a goal off a free kick in the 82nd minute, but the two-time defending World Cup champs hung on for the win.
Schmidt, a central midfielder, started and played all 90 minutes.
Up next for Canada is a date with France on Thursday (9 a.m. Pacific time, CBC TV).
HADWIN 12TH ON CANTOUR
Adam Hadwin was the top local finisher at the Canadian Tour's Syncrude Boreal Open in Fort McMurray, Alta. on the weekend.
Hadwin, fresh off a solid performance at the U.S. Open, shot 66-77-70-69 to finish at six under par, tied for 12th. The result earned him $2,940.
Fellow Abbotsford golfer Nick Taylor (-2) was tied for 29th, while his brother Josh (+4) was T56.
LACROSSE PLAYERS MAKE THE CUT
A trio of local lacrosse players have been picked for the Burnaby Mountain Selects club program.
Jesse Worley made the junior squad, while Brayden Lundy was named to the under-15 team. Attacker Coleton Lundy and goalie Thomas Rennie made the U13 team.
