Matt Revel was the top scorer at the U17 B.C. Cup hockey tournament in Salmon Arm last weekend.
Revel racked up five goals and four assists in six games at the B.C. Cup, a tourney which prepares elite prospects for future participation in Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence. He was one of nine players from the hockey academy at Yale Secondary to be selected for the event, joining Jake Virtanen, Mitch Skapski, Ryan Simpson, Michal Holub, Zach Dyment, Kyle Baron, Cam Seto and Jared Virtanen.
SKAPSKI SENT TO SILVERTIPS
Abbotsford hockey prospect Mitch Skapski was on the move last week, as he was included in a blockbuster Western Hockey League trade.
Skapski, a fourth-round pick by the Portland Winterhawks in the 2011 WHL bantam draft, was sent to the Everett Silvertips in a five-player deal that saw defenceman Seth Jones head the other way. Jones is considered a top prospect for the 2013 NHL entry draft, but he was unwilling to sign with the Silvertips, who owned his rights.
Skapski, a 16-year-old forward, is coming off a big season with the Fraser Valley Bruins of the B.C. Major Midget League. He scored 26 goals and added 23 assists for 49 points in 40 games.
JUMPSTART CHARITY HELPS KIDS PLAY SPORTS
This Saturday, May 26, is Canadian Tire’s annual Jumpstart Day fundraiser.
Jumpstart is a national charitable organization that helps financially disadvantaged kids between ages four and 18 participate in organized sport and recreation by covering registration, equipment and/or transportation costs. Since its launch in 2005, Jumpstart has given 417,835 kids the chance to play, and every dollar raised stays in the community.
At the Abbotsford location (32513 South Fraser Way), the local police and fire departments will be on hand for Saturday's festivities, along with Abbotsford Heat mascot Hawkey.
REGISTER FOR POLICE RUN
Community registration for the Abbotsford Police Challenge Run will be held this Friday, May 25, at Envision Financial’s Minter Street branch from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 21st annual Police Run goes June 9, and will include a 10km challenge route and 5km fun run with great prizes and games for the whole family. Proceeds from the event will go to Special Olympics B.C., which offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete in sports. Last year, the run raised $19,000 for Special Olympics B.C.
