Nickel finished atop the girls under-18 event at her home club, defeating Khendyl Gluck in the final. Other singles division winners on the girls side included Irene Meng (girls 10), Renata Gabuzyan (girls 12) and Andreea Craciun (girls 14). Boys winners included Matias Benedykczak (boys 12), Owen Stimpson (boys 14) and Alexander Saayman.

DOWNHILL BIKE RACE STARTS SATURDAY

Canada’s oldest downhill mountain biking race hits the hills of Mission this weekend.

The 15th annual Bear Mountain Challenge runs Saturday and Sunday. The cross-country race begins at 10 a.m. on Red Mountain, and Sunday’s action featured the downhill at 11:30 a.m. The event is free for spectators. For more information and directions, visit bearmountainchallenge.com.

RENEGADES ARE THE BOYS OF SUMMER

The Abbotsford Renegades atom boys hockey team won the spring league championship at the Langley Sportsplex last week.

The Renegades knocked off their longtime rivals, the West Coast Storm, 5-2 in the final. Logan Visco (2), Nick Mahon, Adam Niwranski and Riley Canning supplied the goals, while Jamie Clarke was outstanding between the pipes.

CASCADES HOST SPORTS CAMPS

The University of the Fraser Valley athletic department is offering a series of sport-specific summer camps in July and August.

The Cascades camps will be led by members of the varsity coaching staffs and UFV athletes, and the dates are as follows:

• Boys basketball, Aug. 15-19

• Girls soccer, Aug. 8-12

• Boys and girls rowing, July 11-15 and July 18-22

• Girls volleyball, Aug. 8-11

• Boys volleyball, Aug. 22-25
