A quartet of Abbotsford players helped the Langley Lightning win the provincial midget AAA female hockey championship in Windermere Valley last week.The Lightning, who feature locals Samantha Rogers, Laura McPhedran, Samantha Schwarz and Rae-Ann McCarthy, went 3-1-1 in the round robin, with victories over Kamloops, Nanaimo and the host Windermere Valley squad.In the final, Langley edged Richmond 3-2, with McPhedran scoring one of the Lightning goals.The Abbotsford players suited up for Langley this season because the Abbotsford Female Hockey Association did not host a midget rep team.“To win was just incredible,” Lightning coach Vince Nelles said. “I don’t think there was a girl who wasn’t crying; just a huge embrace and a hug.”The Lightning victory was all the more impressive considering they attended the tourney with just 10 skaters and one goalie.
HOCKEY REGISTRATION COMING UP
The Abbotsford Female Hockey Association is hosting a registration session on Wednesday, April 6.
The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at MSA Arena. The AFHA is accepting registrations for players aged five to 18.
CASCADES HOST HOOPS CAMP
The University of the Fraser Valley men's basketball program is hosting a skill development camp for boys in grades 9-12, beginning next week.
The 10-session camp tips off at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 4. The coaching group will be led by Cascades head coach Barnaby Craddock, and the cost is $100 per player. Opportunities will be provided at the end of the camp for those interested in competing throughout the summer with the Junior Cascades boys club teams.
SFU TRACK MEET COMES TO ROTARY
The Simon Fraser University track and field team has moved its Emilie Mondor Invitational meet to Abbotsford’s Rotary Stadium, due to construction issues at Terry Fox Field.
The event runs today (Saturday), beginning with the women’s 4x100 metre relay at 12:20 p.m.
