Five Abbotsford football players have been named to the provincial under-18 team which will compete at the FBU International Games in San Antonio, Tex.
A trio of W.J. Mouat Hawks made the cut – record-breaking running back Maleek Irons, defensive lineman Sheriden Lawley, and defensive back/linebacker Taylor Hinton. Defensive lineman Kent Hicks of the Bateman Timberwolves and defensive back Gurtaj Bhangu of the Abby Senior Panthers round out the local contingent.
The FBU International Games run Dec. 30 to Jan. 6 as part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Week, and Team B.C. will play games vs. Team Europe and Team United States.
ROUNDBALL CLASSIC TIPS OFF
Rick Hansen Secondary’s senior boys and girls basketball teams host their annual Roundball Classic tournament this week.
The event features eight teams on both the boys’ and girls’ sides of the draw. Action tips off at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, culminating with the girls (7 p.m.) and boys (8:30 p.m.) gold medal games on Saturday evening.
The Hurricanes boys open vs. Thomas Haney of Maple Ridge at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, followed by the Hansen girls facing Chilliwack’s Unity Christian at noon.
SHOOT FOR THE CURE
The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced this week that for a second consecutive year, all CIS women’s basketball schools will take part in Shoot for the Cure.
The initiative is the WBCA’s fundraising campaign for the fight against breast cancer. Women’s basketball teams do fundraising in conjunction with regular season games, non-conference matches and tournaments, and have raised more than half a million dollars for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation since 2007.
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades host their Shoot for the Cure night on Jan. 26, when they host UNBC in a Canada West regular season match-up.
HOOPS CLUB HOSTS TRAINING SESSIONS
HoopStar Basketball, a local club program, is hosting training sessions at the Abbotsford Evangelical Free Church gym, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 18.
Athletes in Grades 6-8 are welcome to attend. The sessions run from 6-8 p.m. and continue Jan. 3 through March with two practices per week.
