Abbotsford's Bike to Work Week blast-off event is running on Saturday at Thunderbird Square, located between Clearbrook Library and City Hall.
The public is invited to get ready for Bike to Work Week with free bike safety checks provided by Life Cycles Bike Shop, helmet fitting, a kid’s bike derby, bike decorating contest, free barbeque, and a family bike ride.
The event starts at 12 p.m., and judging for the bike decorating contest takes place at 12:30 p.m.
Bike to Work Week runs May 26 to June 1 across B.C. this year. Last year, close to 20,000 participants province-wide saved 209,610 kg of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere in just one week.
This year, registered participants have an opportunity to enter to win prizes including a grand prize of a Cuban cycling tour for two provided by Exodus Travel. This prize package includes round trip airfare, hotel accommodations, and planned routes and itinerary with support cars to follow. The minimum age for this trip is 16 years.
To be eligible to win any of the prizes, participants register for free at biketowork.ca and only need to cycle one day during Bike to Work Week to be entered into the prize draw. If people cannot cycle to work or school, they can cycle to run errands, meet friends for coffee, or anywhere else that they’d normally drive to in order to qualify for the prize draw.
“The goal is to cut down the use of a vehicle during Bike to Work Week and use a bike instead,” says Terri-Lynn Gifford, program coordinator. “We hope people discover that biking to get where they need to go can be enjoyable and doable – in many cases.”
FEMALE HOCKEY REGISTRATION
The Abbotsford Female Hockey Association will be hosting new player registration on Wednesday, June 4 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Abbotsford Rec Centre.

FIGURE SKATERS SPARKLE
Gold medals from Megan Geddes and Jennifer Oh highlighted a series of strong performances from Abbotsford Skating Club athletes at the Super Series Victoria Day competition in Surrey.
Geddes finished atop the standings in the gold interpretive division, while Oh won the Star 4 U13 girls category.
Ainsley Young added a silver medal in the Star 4 U13 girls competition, while ribbon winners in the Star 1-3 divisions included Anna Han (gold, Star 1 girls), Isabella Johnson (silver, Star 1 girls), Anika Phinney (silver, Star 3 girls), Andrew Kim (bronze, Star 3 boys), Lauren Paller (bronze, Star 2 girls) and Kali Lee (bronze, Star 2 girls).
