Rugby Friday Night Lights set to debut

Friday Night Lights is usually associated with football, but tonight (Friday) for the first time ever in Abbotsford, rugby will be contested under the lights.

The annual Abbotsford Cup, pitting the top high school boys rugby teams in the city against each other, is set to be decided at Rotary Stadium tonight.

This year's final features the AAA fourth-ranked in the province Yale Lions squaring off against the Bateman Timberwolves tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The Mouat Hawks take on Langley's R.E. Mountain Secondary also tonight at 6 p.m.

The pair of games cap off a round robin tournament that saw several local teams battle it out.

Fraser Valley AAA and AA high school league play kicked off in March, with Yale posting wins over Clayton Heights on March 31 and Mouat on April 7. The Hawks posted their first regular-season win of the season, with a 31-12 win over Sardis on Tuesday.

Bateman opened up the AA schedule with a 38-29 win over the Abbotsford Secondary Panthers on March 7, with the Panthers bouncing back with a 53-10 win over DW Poppy on March 31. The Timberwolves lost 21-10 to GW Graham on April 5, and then defeated Brookswood by default on Tuesday.

Local teams return to action on Tuesday, with the Panthers taking on Langley Secondary, Yale hosting R.E. Mountain and Mouat playing Clayton Heights.

Also on the schedule for the Lions is participation in the Stadium Series, as Yale battles Oak Bay at Swangard Stadium on April 22 at 5 p.m.
