One of the most challenging sports events to ever occur in Abbotsford came to a close after 41 laps and 275 kilometres on Sunday night (March 24).

North Vancouver’s Jonny Bullock outlasted Abbotsford’s Andreas Klawitter to take home the inaugural Fat Dog Backyard Ultra race title.

The event began on Saturday (March 23) and challenged participants to complete a 6.7056 km (4.167 miles) lap every hour starting on the hour until they either did not complete within the time limit or did not start the next lap at the top of the hour.

The course utilized the parking area at Abbotsford Exhibition Park for the start/finish staging area, then linked to the Discovery Trail and trails around Clearbrook Park in central Abbotsford.

A total of 100 racers participated in the event.

Bullock and Klawitter were the final two racers, starting out at lap 37 at 8 p.m., with Bullock hanging on to earn the win.

According to Klawitter’s Strava profile, he spent 35 hours and 27 minutes on the course and burned approximately 24,195 calories during the event.

Results from the event will enable participants to earn themselves a spot on the “At Large List” for the Canadian National Backyard Ultra team and a chance to compete at the World Backyard Ultra Championship.
