No. 2-ranked Hawks start strong at B.C.’s

The Mouat Hawks defeated Mt. Baker in the their opening game at the BC High School Basketball Championships.

The W.J. Mouat Hawks got off the ground quickly at the BC High School Basketball Girls Provincial Championships with a 76-19 win over Mt. Baker.

“It was an incredible team effort,” said Hawks coach Paula Thompson.

Forward Penielle M’Bikata scored 30 points for the Hawks and was named player of the game.

Six-foot-two forward Alicia Roufosse also had a strong performance for Mouat.

The Hawks, ranked No. 2 heading into the  AAA tourney, next took on R.A. McMath on Thursday at the Langley Events Centre starting at 7 p.m. Results from Thursday’s action were not available at press time.

In other AAA action Wednesday, Abbotsford’s M.E.I defeated Claremont 84-60. They played Oak Bay  Thursday.

In AA girls’ play, Rick Hansen fell to Ballenas 71-52 and played L.V. Rogers Thursday.
