Max Jones soared to the gold medal, but he didn't win the way he wanted to.

Jones cleared 3.20m in the pole vault on Friday afternoon at Rotary Stadium on day one of the BC Summer Games in Abbotsford.

But the 14-year-old from New Westminster (zone 4) had his sights set on achieving a new personal best. He had previously cleared 3.40m.

"I am happy I won the gold, but I really wanted that personal best," he admitted.

Part of the problem on Friday was the wind, which affected his jumps.

But despite that, it wasn't a close competition at all.

Jones was well ahead of Victoria's Nico Pryma (zone 6) who won silver at 2.60m.

Abbotsford's Joshua Carsience won bronze for zone 3, also clearing 2.60m
