Another graduating member of the W. J. Mouat Hawks football team will be hitting the gridiron at the post-secondary level in the fall.
Grade 12 student Nelson Lokombo announced last week that he will be joining the University of Saskatchewan Huskies for 2017, the third Hawk this year to sign on the dotted line with a college club.
Lokombo picked up 490 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns in six appearances with the Hawks in 2016. He also picked up six tackles and one interception on defence.
While he primarily played running back and defensive back for the Hawks, the Huskies have him slotted right now as a linebacker/defensive back.
The Huskies finished last season with a record of five wins and three losses in Canada West conference action, but then fell in the Hardy Cup semi-final to the Calgary Dinos.
Lokombo joins fellow Hawks Gary Ghag (McMaster University) and Tyrone Baker (Culver-Stockton College) in the post-secondary football world.
He is the younger brother of Boseko Lokombo, who also starred for the Hawks and more recently the B.C. Lions, before signing on with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens in January.
Lokombo and the Huskies open the regular season on Sept. 1, when they take on the University of Manitoba Bisons.
