The W.J. Mouat Hawks wrestling team collected a pair of British Columbia School Sports provincial banners in Vancouver on Feb. 24.

Mouat won both the boys championship banner and the aggregate championship after excellent results from a number of Hawks wrestlers.

The Hawks just edged out Surrey’s Tamanawis Secondary 76-73 and the title was decided when Mouat’s Michaeljeet Grewal defeated Tamanawis’s Jastej Mundi in the boys 90 kilograms final.

Grewal scored first and was in the lead 6 -2 at the end of the first period and in the second period Grewal outscored Mundi to win by a technical superiority 10-point lead.

As a result, Grewal earned the 90 kg gold medal and Mouat captured the boys banner. The 90 kg finals match was selected as the boys division’s Most Outstanding Match.

Mouat also got gold medals from the Dhinsa brothers, as Tejvir and Jagroop won the 110 kg and 130 kg divisions respectively. Tejvir pinned Royal Bay Secondary’s Jack Pye early in the first round of the final, while Jagroop won his final match early with a technical superiority victory early in the first round.

The BCSS Aggregate Championship banner was aided by the gold medal performance of Mouat’s Paradise Johnson. She outscored Kelsey Grothen from Campbell River in the first round of the finals. Johnson finished the final match with a pin early in the second round.

Other Hawks capturing medals included: Nathan Thiel (silver, boys 57 kg) and Gurshaan Kahlon (bronze, boys 60 kg).

Other Abbotsford-based wrestlers taking home medals at the event consisted of: Rick Hansen’s Gurshar Johal (silver, boys 54 kg) and Robert Bateman’s Jovanpreet Johal (bronze, boys 70 kg).
