The MEI Eagles senior boys basketball team has entered rarified air at the basketball provincial championships.

For the first time since 1995, MEI will be playing for a senior boys provincial title.

The Eagles have not won a provincial title in the senior boys competition since 1970.

MEI qualified for the championship game with a 79-75 win over the first-seeded St. Patrick Celtics in Langley on Friday (March 8).

The Eagles got 20 points from Spencer Tatlock and 17 from Isaiah Lee. MEI also got solid contributions from Nathan Laspa (12 points) and Ben Brandsma (10 points).

MEI led 20-15 after the first quarter and 35-31 at halftime, but ran away with the game in the fourth quarter. An 8-1 run in the fourth put them on top for good.

This win comes off a dramatic 67-66 overtime win over the North Delta Huskies on Thursday (March 7).

MEI will now take on the second-seeded Dover Bay Dolphins in the 3A final. The Dolphins defeated Lord Byng 68-56 in the other semifinal on Friday. Dover Bay also defeated the STMC Knights 89-65 on Thursday.

The 3A provincial final tips off at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday (March 9) at the Langley Events Centre’s arena bowl.
