Mission swimmer Brent Hayden has qualified for the finals of the 100-metre freestyle at the London Olympics.
The 28-year-old product of the Mission Marlins swim club breezed through the heats with the fifth-fastest time (48.52 seconds), then finished sixth in the semifinals (48.21) to punch his ticket to the eight-man final.
Hayden, the 2007 world champion in the 100m free and a silver medalist in the same event at the 2011 worlds, is seeking his first Olympic medal.
Australian James Magnussen, who edged Hayden for gold at the worlds last year, was the fastest qualifier, clocking in at 47.63. Other finalists include Nathan Adrian of the United States, Hanser Garcia of Cuba, Cesar Cielo of Brazil, Sebastiaan Verschuren of the Netherlands, Yannick Agnel of France, and Nikita Lobintsev of Russia.
The 100m freestyle final runs at 12:20 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday and will be televised on CTV.
