W.J. Mouat Hawks running back Maleek Irons and Rick Hansen Hurricanes linebacker Brandon Ho highlighted the local content on the AAA and AA Eastern Conference high school football all-star teams, which were unveiled last week.
Irons was the AAA conference's offensive MVP, while Ho was named the defensive MVP of the AA conference.
Irons, who set a provincial record in 2012 with 3,304 rushing yards, has been dominant once again this fall – his 2,346 rush yards through the end of the regular season were tops in the province, and he also scored 26 touchdowns on the ground.
Four of Irons's Hawks teammates were also named AAA conference all-stars: tight end Jake Firlotte (27 receptions, 579 yards, 12 TDs), offensive lineman Levi Hua, defensive lineman Akash Sandhu (40 tackles, three sacks) and linebacker Manpreet Chhina (67 tackles).
On the AA scene, an eye-popping 11 Abbotsford players were honoured as conference all-stars, led by Ho (pictured below, tackling Bateman's Daniel Mills), who racked up 55 tackles and six sacks to pace a stingy Hansen defence.
Ho's twin brother Alex was the AA all-star quarterback after leading the circuit in passing yards with 2,123, and his favourite target, Zach Toews, was an all-star receiver after racking up a AA-best 902 receiving yards and 10 TDs.
Other Hansen all-stars included defensive linemen Shaiheem Charles-Brown (55 tackles, 10 sacks) and Jimmy Brar (33 tackles), and defensive back Brad Atkinson (45 tackles, six interceptions).
The Bateman Timberwolves had five players honoured, including running back Ben Cummings (1,544 rush yards, second-most in AA), receiver Daniel Mills, linebackers Sam Kuyek (42 tackles, two sacks) and Austen Zacher (34 tackles), and defensive back Tanner Friesen (42 tackles).
