The Ag Rec Building was the hub of the B.C. high school wrestling scene last Saturday, as wrestlers from across the province attended the Miri Piri Wrestling Club’s seventh annual meet.
The event drew 300 high school grapplers and 80 elementary schoolers, including several athletes who made the trip from Alberta.
“The tournament is growing every year,” said Sucha Mann, head coach of the Miri Piri club and the defending provincial champion Rick Hansen Secondary boys team. “We had six mats running full time, and every single mat had close to 100 matches.”
Highlights for Mann’s club included gold medals from Hansen teammates Jobanjit Phulka (84 kg) and Justin Gill (70 kg), and MEI’s Rajin Gill (90 kg). Phulka has a great rivalry going with Ajay Gill of North Surrey, and he avenged a loss at the Western Canada Age Class meet in Kamloops earlier in the season by beating Gill in the final of the Miri Piri meet.
