Gobbler celebrates 38th year

Thanksgiving weekend rugby tournament returns to Abbotsford

Forget the turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing, the Abbotsford Rugby Club is preparing to deliver scrums, tries and tackles this Thanksgiving weekend.

The ARC’s annual Gobbler Rugbyfest Tournament returns for its 38th annual spectacular and the two-day tournament attracts clubs from all over the Pacific Northwest.

The tournament kicks off Saturday morning and champions are crowned on Sunday afternoon, with all games occurring at Abbotsford Exhibition Park.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the ARC, which runs programs and teams for players of all ages from kindergartners in the “Mini Rugby” program to seniors on the “Old Boys” squad.

Cash prizes are awarded to both men’s and women’s division winners. Last year’s champion for the men’s division was the Surrey Beavers. The 2013 winners were the Bateman Alumni for the men and the Wild Guns for the women.

Saturday night is highlighted by the annual Gobbler Dance at the Agrifair Arena and this year’s featured performer is The Chris Buck band.
