Flag football festival ready for kickoff

The second annual Western Canadian Flag Football Championships kicks off at Exhibition Park this weekend.

The second annual Western Canadian Flag Football Championships kicks off at Exhibition Park this weekend.

The event, which runs this Saturday and Sunday, has expanded in scope for Year 2. The tournament field has grown from six to nine teams, and switching venues from DeLair Park to Exhibition Park also allows for more elbow room, organizer Scott Beadell pointed out.

“Last year’s event went really well, and we’re excited about the growth,” Beadell said.

Game action begins at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, culminating with the top flight championship game at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The tournament is sanctioned by the Metro Competitor Flag Football Union (MCFFU), and teams can earn points towards qualifying for the national championship in Las Vegas. Cash prizes are up for grabs, including $2,000 for the top flight champ.

Touting the high calibre of play, Beadell notes that former B.C. Lions players Bret Anderson (B.C. Fire) and Duncan O’Mahony (Vancouver Villians) will be among the participants.

The field also features a local entry from the Fraser Valley Touch Football Association.

The action on the gridiron will be supplemented by food vendors, a kids’ tent, and face painting.
