A pair of Abbotsford athletes reached the podium at the annual Okanagan Valley Throwdown functional fitness event in Penticton last weekend.

CrossFit Abbotsford athletes Tanya Johnson and Brenda Skerlak each finished second in their respective women’s masters divisions at the event, which tests competitors against each other in strength, power, speed, endurance, stamina and agility contests.

Abbotsford’s Steven Michaud, one of the events youngest participants at 17, finished fourth overall in the men’s recreational division. After finishing second at the event in 2-15, Abbotsford’s Concetta D’Amato placed fourth in the women’s elite division.

The Abbotsford team had 25 athletes ranging in age from 17 to 50 at the event. Out of 26 participating gyms, CrossFit Abbotsford had the most competitors.

“This group has a lot of fun together and we’re really excited about our growth as a team,” said Abbotsford CrossFit’s Matt McAleese.

“To have so many athletes compete and even more come up for support all the way to Penticton is a big deal for us.”
