Concerns about the smoky skies in B.C. have cancelled the Abbotsford travel plans of the University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos men’s basketball team.

The club was scheduled to play games against the Douglas College Royals on Thursday, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Friday and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Wednesday.

The announcement was made on the team’s website on Monday.

According to the site, it was determined that the air quality would not improve sufficiently to allow for games to be played without risk.

“We were very much looking forward to the trip, both from a competitive standpoint and for the opportunity to experience one of North America’s great cities,” Gauchos head coach Joe Pasternack stated. “Our thoughts are with the people of British Columbia as they continue to battle the fires.”

The next scheduled game for the Cascades men’s basketball team is an exhibition tilt against the VIU Mariners on Oct. 18.
