Rinks from Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador will contest both the women's and men's finals at the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships on Sunday morning.
In the women's semifinal on Saturday afternoon, Newfoundland's Cathy Cunningham knocked off Nancy Delahunt's Nova Scotia foursome 5-3 to punch her ticket to the final, where she'll meet Alberta's Cathy King.
The game got off to a very conservative start, as a steal of one by Nova Scotia in the second end was the lone point registered over the first five ends. But Cunningham broke through in the sixth, scoring three.
The Newfoundlanders broke the game open in the eighth with a steal of two to make it 5-1, and Delahunt's team, with Colleen Jones throwing last rocks, was only able to muster a single point in both the ninth and 10th ends.
"It was very wide-open," Cunningham noted afterward, alluding to the fact there were few rocks in play for much of the game.
"Scoring three in the sixth gave us a bit of breathing room, and it allows you to relax a little bit. And if you relax a little bit, then you throw better."
The women's final figures to be a great battle – King edged Cunningham 6-5 during the round robin.
"I'm expecting the same as today's game, to some degree," Cunningham said. "It really depends where the first rock of the end goes. I'm certainly willing to play more rocks in play, and I'm willing to play it wide-open."
On the men's side, Alberta's Rob Armitage was awaiting the winner of Saturday evening's semifinal between Newfoundland's Glenn Goss and Ontario's Brian Lewis.
Goss got the best of it, winning 10-4 in eight ends. The second end was pivotal, as the Newfoundlanders scored four to take an early 4-0 lead. Then in the eighth end, nursing a 7-4 lead, Goss scored three to salt away the victory.
Both the men's and women's finals run at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Abbotsford Recreation Centre.
