Abbotsford’s Yale Lions and MEI Eagles win on day one of senior girls basketball provincials

Lions and Eagles continue provincial title journey on Thursday, Bateman and ACS eliminated

The Yale Lions and MEI Eagles both opened their respective senior girls basketball provincials with wins at the Langley Events Centre on Wednesday (Feb. 28).

The Eagles kicked off the 3A event as the number four seed and defeated Mark R. Isfeld 66-55 on Wednesday. MEI led 45-25 at halftime and never let Isfeld back into the game.

Lola Reimer had an excellent game for the Eagles with 31 points, while Olivia Sidhu added nine. MEI now takes on the fifth-ranked Reynolds team today (Thursday) at noon.

Yale, ranked seventh in the 4A, posted a dominant 84-47 win over Oak Bay on Wednesday night.

The Lions started out hot and led 29-3 after the first quarter and then 50-19 at halftime to cruise to the win. Ella Bohn led all Lions with 24 points, while Kendal Dueck added 16.

Yale now takes on the second-ranked Argyle Pipers today at 5:15 p.m.

Meanwhile the Robert Bateman Timberwolves have been eliminated from 3A championship contention after a 56-48 loss to W.L. Seaton on Wednesday.

Bateman entered the event ranked seventh and fell to the 10th ranked Seaton team. Thalia Olay led the Timberwolves with 11 points, while Erin Misura scored 10. Bateman will now compete in the consolation bracket.

The Abbotsford Christian School Knights also lost on day one of the 2A tournament, dropping a 59-50 decision to Pacific Academy on Wednesday. Camryn Voros scored a team-high 14 points in the loss.

ACS was up 31-19 at halftime, but then couldn’t hang on in the second half.
