Abbotsford’s MEI Eagles, Yale Lions win on day one of senior boys basketball provincials

Teams return to Langley to compete in the elite eight starting on Thursday (March 7)

The MEI Eagles and Yale Lions senior boys basketball teams have advanced to the elite eight of their respective tournaments.

Day one of the senior boys basketball provincials took over the Langley Events Centre on Wednesday (March 6), with MEI taking on Windsor in the 3A tournament at 3 p.m.

The Eagles led 39-36 at halftime and then took over in the second half by holding Windsor to just 17 points to earn the 74-53 win.

MEI’s Spencer Tatlock scored a game-high 19 points and was named the team’s player of the game.

The Eagles entered the tournament seeded fifth in the province and next take on the fourth-ranked North Delta Huskies tomorrow (Thursday) at 7 p.m. The Huskies beat Wellington 66-45 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile in the 4A tournament, the Yale Lions engaged in an offensive shootout with the St. George’s Saints and scored a 100-97 win.

Yale trailed 54-45 at halftime, but then battled back in the second half to collect the victory.

Taige Roberts scored a team-high 31 points for Yale, while Nylan Roberts and Aaron Adams added 26. St. George’s Dorian Glogovac recorded 37 points in a losing cause.

The eighth-seeded Lions now take on the first-seeded Oak Bay Bays tomorrow at 8:45 p.m. Oak Bay beat Mount Baker 97-47 on Wednesday.
