Abbotsford’s Kailyn Haig will be representing Great Britain at this summer’s U17 2023 Canada Cup softball tournament.

The Grade 10 Yale Secondary student was announced as part of the roster for the Canada Cup’s showcase gold tournament, which runs from July 10 to 16 in at Surrey’s Softball City.

Haig was born in Scotland and has dual citizenship in Canada and Great Britain. She had to submit videos of her in action for the tryout process. She made the announcement on social media after the team’s roster was announced on Friday (April 28).

“I’m excited to announce that I’ve been selected to play with Great Britain’s U17 national team,” she said. “Thank you to my teammates, coaches and parents for pushing me during this process and congratulations to all the other girls who made the team.”

Last summer Haig was a key part of the Abbotsford Outlaws softball team that won provincial gold. She excelled as a pitcher for the team and struck out eight batters in one of her appearances on the mound. The team went on to finish fifth at the Western Canadian Championships later that summer.

Haig is also a member of the Yale softball academy.

Great Britain head coach Jodie Rushin stated that she is looking forward to seeing how the team competes at the Canada Cup.

“The team has been selected through a rigorous process of face-to-face trials for UK-based athletes and video submissions from non-UK-based athletes,” she said. “The players have put in tremendous effort and dedication to earn their spot on the team, and we will be thrilled to see them showcase their skills against experienced teams from the USA, Canada, and Israel. We know that this will be a real test for our athletes, but we believe in their abilities and are confident that they will rise to the occasion and represent GB Softball with pride.”
