Local wrestler places second in his 79 kilograms division at event over the weekend

Abbotsford’s Jasmit Singh Phulka earned a silver at the Pan-Am Championships in Mexico.

Abbotsford’s Jasmit Singh Phulka has scored silver at the Pan-Am Championships in Mexico.

The event ran from Feb. 21 to 24 and Phulka competed in the men’s freestyle 79 kilograms division.

The Abbotsford product competed in a four-man round robin and opened with a loss to American Alexander Facundo. He then bounced back with wins over Mexico’s Jose Manuel Cano Lopez and Uruguay’s Dylan Palacio to earn the silver.

Phulka wasn’t the only local at the event, as Abbotsford’s Jorawar Dhinsa placed fifth in the 130 kg division at the men’s Greco-Roman competition.

Dhinsa defeated Mexico’s Beder Angel Cantu Martinez, but then lost to American Cohlton Michael Schultz and Venezuelan Moises Salvador Perez Hellburg. He next heads to the Pan-Am Olympic qualifiers which run from Feb. 28 to March 1.

Former UFV Cascades wrestler and current Coquitlam resident also earned a silver medal in the women’s 62 kg division. She defeated Brazil’s Lais Nunes in the semifinal, but then lost to American Kayla Miracle in a 6-6 decision that Miracle won on criteria.
