Abbotsford’s Ashlyen Singh wins BCSS Women in Sports and Leadership Award

Abbotsford’s Ashlyen Singh has been named the recipient of the BC School Sports Women in Sports and Leadership Award.

Rick Hansen Secondary teacher Ashlyen Singh has been recognized for their passion and dedication by BC School Sports and has been awarded the 2022-23 Women in Sports and Leadership Award.

Singh teaches all grades at RHS and is both the girls basketball director and the head coach of the Grade 9 girls basketball team. She helped lead that team to a fifth-place finish provincially, which is the best showing ever for that team.

She is also the president of the Abbotsford Basketball Association and have helped transform that group into a destination for providing resources for funding, hosting leagues for players of all ages, providing scholarships, and promoting the sport of basketball within Abbotsford. The ABA initially formed in 2017.

Singh has a deep connection to basketball in Abbotsford and was part of the 2011 W. J. Mouat Hawks 3A provincial championship team.

Following her graduation at Mouat, they enrolled in the University of the Fraser Valley and achieved both a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of education.

While working in the Abbotsford school district, she is also in the process of completing their master’s degree in education at UFV.

The award Singh won recognizes the service and leadership of women in school sports. The description states that the recipient is a role model to colleagues and student athletes alike.

The recipient has also made a tangible impact on school sport and has demonstrated commitment to their student athletes, their school, and their sport.

According to the BCSS press release, Singh and the other award recipients help to ensure school sport is a possibility for student athletes. They personify the values of school sport and continue to be an essential piece in its delivery.

The awards recognize and celebrate leaders, coaches, administrators and officials for their commitment and dedication both on and off the field of play.

All winners will be formally honoured at the BCSS awards dinner on May 12 in Whistler.
