A father and son duo new to karate left Kelowna with a bronze and two gold medals respectively on Saturday (March 11).

Abbotsford Shotokan Karate Club athletes Shane Russell and his son Christian Russell excelled at the Spring Kelowna JKA Championship Karate Cup at Immaculata Catholic High School in the Okanagan city.

Christian won gold in both kumite and kata, while Shane earned bronze in kata.

“It was a great experience to be at the tournament with my son and I’m just happy to be part of it. And I’m grateful to be part of our club,” Shane said.

Sensei Sidhu of the ASKC stated that he is pleased to see his club members succeed at the event.

“I’m very proud of Shane and Christian for their spirit and sportsmanship,” he siad. “Even though the winter weather limited our participation in this tournament to just two members, they did a great job of representing our club. And that is important ‒ our club is part of the Japan Karate Association (JKA). The JKA holds the highest standards and that’s why it is highly respected around the world.”
