An Abbotsford air cadet won gold in the male junior category at the Provincial Cadet Biathlon Championship at Whistler over the weekend.

Ethan Algra of the 861 Silverfox Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Abbotsford beat silver medalist Cadet Emmanuel Bussani, also of 861 Silverfox, by more than five minutes.

The championship was held for the first time at the Whistler Athletic Park on the 50th Anniversary of the Canadian flag and the fifth anniversary of the 2010 Olympic Games.

Sixty cadets gathered from around the province and were winners of zone competitions in their local areas.

The cadet biathlon program is a recreational activity that has produced Olympians such as Jean-Philippe Le Guellec and World Cup competitors such as B.C.’s Emma Lunder.

The cadets learn valuable skills through the program that develop self-discipline, increased confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
