I recently visited my mother-in-law in Abbotsford and was disappointed to hear the city doesn’t have a blue box recycling program.
My mother-in-law said she doesn’t recycle because of the inconvenience of having to drive and pick up and purchase bags each week.
I called the city and told them I thought this is a deterrent for people to recycle and was told that actually it’s more of an incentive because “people recycle more when they don’t have to sort things.”
I believe this to be untrue.
In Victoria we have a blue box program and all you need to sort is paper from plastic which isn’t too complicated and on recycling day every house has two to six blue bins out.
Sorting paper from plastic is effortless (as long as you have one bin for both) compared to driving each week to pick up bags.
I would love to see someone look into the effectiveness of your recycling program and get the residents’ input on how effective they think it is as well.
Obviously, people living in condos and townhouses don’t need to worry about this because they have big industrial recycling bins, I imagine.
