LETTER: Homelessness involves dealing with people, not just issues

How do we address homelessness in Abbotsford?

How do we address homelessness in Abbotsford?

The debate continues as homelessness remains.

I don’t know about you, but as an individual citizen, it’s easy to feel helpless. Or frustrated. Or angry. Or sad. Or indifferent. And then do nothing.

The issue is so complex we can’t even begin to imagine a personal response beyond a financial donation here or a can of food there.

I recently visited the people camping at Jubilee Park. Tired of my own preconceptions of homelessness in Abbotsford, I decided to go see the situation for myself.

I was welcomed hospitably. I asked some of the camp residents what citizens of Abbotsford can do.

What did I hear? Four words: “Come talk to us.”

Through all the complexity of homelessness, let’s remember we are dealing with people, not just issues. Go say hi!
