William McCABE

McCABE

William (Bill) Vaniah

Born October 17, 1922 in Bethune, SK to Arthur and Hannah McCabe. Died October 19, 2008 from a massive heart attack at his home in Aldergrove, BC. Bill grew up on a homestead near Prince George, BC. After attending the new Green Timbers Forestry School in Surrey, BC, he became the youngest Forest Ranger in British Columbia working in the Cariboo. In 1952 he moved with his wife Esther (d. Oct. 5, 1981) to Terrace as the Fire Boss for Columbia Cellulose and to establish his family. Later he became the Construction Superintendent in charge of building the roads needed to open and develop the Nass Valley. In 1968 Bill left the forest industry and took his family to the big city as the Surface Works Manager of Canadian Mines Services of Vancouver. He soon realized, however, that professional success was less important to him than time with his family. Once again he changed careers and realized his life-long dream of farming when he moved to Jackman Road in Aldergrove in 1970. Bill continued farming, after the loss of Esther, for a few more years until his children were established on their own. In 1986 Bill married long-time friend Marge Harper. Bill and Marge made a new home for themselves in Aldergrove and enjoyed an active and happy life together in their retirement. Bill is survived by his loving wife Marge, his brother Bruce (Jean) of Parksville, children; Dan in Vancouver, Rod in Kamloops, Tom (May) of North Carolina and Lois of Lumby, BC. Grandchildren; Tyrone, Keegan, Colin, Robin, Darby, Alexander, Pom, Christina, Katie, Ian, Kimberly, Marge’s children Cathie and Robert (Lynn). Bill was predeceased by his first wife Esther, brothers Charlie, Tom, Jesse and sister Tekla. Service to be held Monday, October 27th at 1:00 pm at Aldergrove United Church 2623 – 272nd St., Aldergrove.
