MARIE HELENA (BROWNSON)

Peacefully at Caressant Care in Marmora, ON, Marie (Brownson) O'Neill entered into rest on Tuesday, April 15th, 2008, in her 98th year.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Patrick Joseph O'Neill in April 1952 and her son Frank (Pansy) in October 1998. The eldest daughter of Addie (Lajoie) and Arthur Brownson, she was born on Oct. 10, 1910 in Tweed , ON.

Marie will be lovingly remembered by her sons: Harold (Judy), Barrie, ON; John (Linda), Nipissing, ON; Kelly (Karen), Orleans, ON; Joseph (Janet), Marmora, ON; Peter (Sandra) Oshawa, ON and her only daughter, Rosemarie (George) Menassas of Abbotsford, BC. Marie will be greatly missed by her surviving siblings, Annie Callery, Marmora, ON; Cecil (Eunice) Bancroft, ON and Arthur (Helen) of Oshawa, ON. Also left to mourn her are 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

During her lifetime, Marie was an active member of the Marmora Community. She held leadership positions in the Catholic Women's League (President; Treasurer, Secretary); Women's Institute (District President and Life Member); RCL Branch 237 Ladies Auxiliary (Charter Member, President, Life member); Senior Citizen's Club (Treasurer). She was a devout member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Marmora. One of her mottoes "For God and Country" was passed on to her children as 5 of her children, one of her grandchildren and 3 of her great-grandchildren have served their country in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Marie was well known in the community for winning awards for baking at the Agricultural Fair, teaching sewing, quilting, and cooking with the 4-H and Women's Institute. Marie had creative talents for oil painting, sewing and various crafts. Her "cookie jar" was always full.

She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends and visited Ireland, Germany, France as well as coast to coast in North America. Her green thumb provided her family with fruits, berries and vegetables and her flowers graced the altar most Sundays in the summer.

Visitation was held at McConnell Funeral Home, Marmora, ON on Friday April 18th from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Requiem Mass was held at Sacred Heart Church, Marmora, ON on April 19th, 2008 at 1 PM, Rev L. diRocco officiating. Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Pallbearers were 6 of her O'Neill grandsons: Casey, Jason, Kelvin, Kevin, Mark and Stephen.
