UNGER

Leona Ruth (nee Wiens)

Leona passed away on April 14, 2016 in her 92nd year at Christine Morrison Hospice at the Mission Memorial Hospital. She is predeceased by her husband Abram Unger and son Shelby Unger and survived by children Rick (Sandi) Unger, Robert (Eva) Unger, Kathy (Eric) Janzen, Jim (Sylvia) Unger, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Leona was born and spent her early years in a family of 12 in southern Saskatchewan during difficult economic but happy times. In 1946 she married Abe Unger and within a few years they moved to a small farm in the Peardonville community of Abbotsford. Together, they worked tirelessly to provide for and raise 5 children. Leona was also active in the community, church and keeping in contact with extended family. They enjoyed a long retirement together and Leona was Abe's caregiver until his passing in 2011. Even through her difficult final years, she always showed her love and appreciation to those around her. Her last two years were spent at Primrose Gardens at Menno Place in Abbotsford, BC. At Leona's request a private family graveside internment and a Celebration of Life will be held on April 30, 2016. The family is grateful for the care Mom received by the doctors, nurses and volunteers at the Christine Morrison Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society - BC & Yukon Division in memory of Leona.
