January 20, 1943 - April 4, 2023
It is with deep sadness we share the passing of George.
Predeceased by his father (Siegfried) and mother (Johanna) and survived by his loving wife (Cheryl), children Monika (John), Angela, Lisa (Ross), Darren (Helen), Justin (Sara) and 5 grandchildren. Brother Harald (Carol), Sister Rosemary (Gary), and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Born in Germany, George came to Canada with his family as a young boy in 1952. He worked on the family farm until he joined the RCAF due to his love of flying and aviation.
After leaving the RCAF, George joined the Victoria PD before moving on to become the 12th member of the Matsqui Police which eventually became the Abbotsford PD. He served for 38 years before retiring and earning the title 'the Gentleman of the Abbotsford Police Dept.'
He was a fair, kind and honorable policeman and was respected by his peers and all who knew him.
George was a proud Canadian, loved being a Police Officer and serving his community. His career spanned many roles including motorcycle patrol (frmr Blue Knights Int'l), school liaison officer, community liaison officer, undercover investigations, and supervisory roles including shift commander. In all, he was highly regarded and revered.
George was involved in many charitable organizations throughout his life including volunteer firefighting, Commanding Officer of 861 Air Cadet Squadron, and the Cadet League of Canada. He also served as President of the Abbotsford Flying Club and was a board member of the Abbotsford International Airshow for many years, ultimately becoming President in 1996.
George was a humanitarian, lover of animals and his garden. He bred various breeds of dogs and birds. When asked about hunting, he would always say that he would prefer to shoot with a camera. He also took great pride in caring for his many unique flowers and plants.
During George's last few years, he was cared for at Chemainus Health Care Centre where he fought courageously with dementia. All the while, he never lost his sense of humour and his kindness. His sweet smile and kind eyes would light up any room even in his later years.
And throughout, his loving wife Cheryl opened her heart, shared love and knowledge with the family and global community and cared for George in a way that only a true love story could tell.
The family wishes to express their thanks to George's medical team locally, as well as all the friends near and far who have followed his 'journey through dementia'.
At the Family's request, a Memorial Service will take place in the near future.
In his memory and in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the SPCA or your local Animal Rescue Centre.
